Cross-Regional Drone Delivery for Emergency Power Grid Inspection
Project Overview
During the summer peak, surface temperatures approached 60°C, creating severe working conditions for power grid inspection teams.
At the same time, three heavy-load power lines required urgent inspection. Several inspection points were located in remote areas, making it difficult and time-consuming for personnel to travel long distances to deliver spare batteries, high-definition inspection equipment, and other essential supplies.
To address the challenge, the inspection team used drones for cross-regional emergency supply delivery, transporting critical equipment directly to remote inspection points.
This allowed inspection personnel to reduce unnecessary long-distance travel in extreme heat while keeping inspection operations moving across multiple locations.
The Challenge
Extreme Heat
With surface temperatures approaching 60°C, long-distance travel and prolonged outdoor work created significant challenges for inspection personnel.
Reducing unnecessary exposure to extreme heat became an important operational consideration.
Remote Inspection Points
The three power lines requiring urgent inspection extended across areas where some inspection points were difficult to access.
Delivering batteries, inspection equipment, and other supplies required additional travel time and manpower.
Urgent Inspection Requirements
The inspections needed to be completed during a critical period to support safe and reliable power supply during the summer peak.
Delays in equipment delivery could directly affect the progress of inspection operations.
Inefficient Manual Supply Delivery
Under conventional methods, personnel would need to travel long distances to transport additional batteries and equipment between locations.
This created additional workload and reduced overall operational efficiency.
The Drone Delivery Solution
To solve the emergency supply challenge, the inspection team introduced drone-based cross-regional logistics.
Drones were used to transport critical inspection supplies directly to remote inspection points, including:
- Spare batteries
- High-definition inspection equipment
- Other essential inspection supplies
By shifting supply transportation from ground-based personnel to aerial delivery, the team reduced unnecessary long-distance travel and enabled inspection personnel to focus on their primary inspection tasks.
The drone logistics solution effectively connected supply points and remote inspection locations, helping maintain continuous inspection operations under extreme weather conditions.
How the Solution Worked
01 — Identify Inspection Requirements
The inspection team identified three heavy-load power lines requiring urgent inspection and determined the equipment and supplies needed at each remote inspection point.
02 — Prepare Critical Supplies
Spare batteries, high-definition inspection equipment, and other necessary materials were prepared for aerial transportation.
03 — Drone-Based Supply Delivery
Drones transported the supplies across regions and delivered them directly to designated remote inspection points.
This reduced the need for personnel to make long-distance supply trips under extreme heat.
04 — Continue Inspection Operations
With critical supplies delivered directly to the required locations, inspection teams could continue their work without waiting for manual transportation.
Multiple inspection operations could therefore proceed simultaneously.
05 — Complete the Inspection
The inspection teams identified five layout defects during the operation, providing important information for subsequent power grid maintenance and safety management.
Key Advantages
Reduced Personnel Exposure to Extreme Heat
Drone delivery reduced the need for personnel to travel long distances under surface temperatures approaching 60°C.
This helped improve operational safety while maintaining inspection progress.
Faster Supply Delivery
Aerial transportation provided a direct connection between supply points and remote inspection locations, reducing the time and manpower required for manual delivery.
Continuous Inspection Operations
By delivering batteries and inspection equipment directly to the required locations, drones helped inspection teams maintain their operations without unnecessary interruptions.
Simultaneous Multi-Point Operations
The improved logistics efficiency allowed inspection activities at multiple locations to proceed simultaneously, helping accelerate the overall inspection process.
Project Results
The drone-based emergency logistics solution delivered measurable operational improvements.
6× Higher Efficiency
The combined efficiency of supply delivery and inspection operations reached approximately six times that of manual work.
Five Layout Defects Identified
During the inspection process, teams identified five layout defects, providing actionable information for power grid maintenance.
23,000 Households Supported
The completed inspection work helped ensure the safe operation of the power grid during the summer period, supporting electricity safety for approximately 23,000 households.
Safer Operations in Extreme Heat
Drone delivery reduced unnecessary long-distance travel for personnel, allowing critical supplies to reach remote inspection points while limiting exposure to extreme temperatures.
Business Impact
This project demonstrates that drones can play a role in power grid operations beyond aerial inspection itself.
By combining drone logistics with power grid inspection, critical equipment and supplies can be delivered quickly to remote locations, allowing inspection teams to maintain operational continuity even when environmental conditions make conventional transportation difficult.
The solution helped achieve both:
More Efficient Logistics
Critical batteries and inspection equipment were delivered directly to remote inspection points.
More Efficient Inspection
Inspection teams could focus on inspection work rather than spending time transporting supplies.
Improved Operational Safety
Reduced unnecessary personnel travel under extreme heat.
Faster Emergency Response
Drone logistics provided a flexible transportation option for urgent inspection requirements.
Reliable Summer Power Supply
The completed inspections supported electricity safety for approximately 23,000 households.
Beyond Inspection: Drones as an Emergency Logistics Tool
Power grid inspection often involves remote locations, challenging terrain, heavy equipment, and time-sensitive operations.
In these situations, drone technology can provide value not only through aerial inspection, but also through rapid transportation of critical supplies.
This project demonstrates how drone-based logistics can support power grid teams by connecting remote inspection points with the equipment and resources they need.
For utilities and infrastructure operators, this creates a more flexible model for emergency response, inspection support, and remote operational logistics.
