Drone Infrared Temperature Inspection: Fault Warning Case of 220kV Substation Equipment

A 220kV substation in the core area of a city undertakes 30% of the power supply task for the urban area. The substation is densely equipped, and traditional manual inspections using handheld infrared thermometers have issues such as many temperature measurement blind spots and cumbersome data recording. After adopting drone-based infrared temperature inspections, drones follow preset routes to conduct comprehensive scans of key equipment in the substation, including transformers, circuit breakers, and isolating switches.

The infrared thermal cameras can obtain real-time temperature data of various parts of the equipment and generate temperature distribution heat maps. During the peak electricity usage period in the summer of 2024, drone inspections prevented a major accident of the main transformer burning out, ensured reliable power supply in the urban area, and reduced power outage losses by approximately 5 million yuan.
